MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will restrict free Gemini users to its Flash-Lite model starting October 9, 2026. The change applies to Gemini Apps used with personal Google accounts. Users without a Google AI subscription will lose access to Flash and Pro after the new model rules take effect. Google says the update forms part of broader changes to model availability across its consumer AI plans. The company announced the revised access structure in its Gemini Apps support documentation.

Google AI Plus subscribers will retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash, but they will no longer have access to Pro. Google has not set one public transition date for all AI Plus subscribers. The company says affected customers should receive an email explaining when the revised access rules will apply to their accounts. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will continue to receive access to Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. The timing for Plus accounts will depend on the notice sent by Google.
Google describes Flash-Lite as an efficient model built for speed and everyday tasks such as summarization and brainstorming. Flash offers more capability while balancing speed and reasoning across simple and complex requests. Pro remains Google’s most advanced Gemini model for demanding tasks, including complex mathematics and coding. Google also says Pro provides deeper understanding across text, files, images and video. Response times for Pro may also be longer than with other Gemini models.
Paid plans retain broader Gemini access
Users with access to a model will also be able to choose low, medium or high effort levels. Google says higher effort can improve task completion and produce more thorough answers. Those settings also consume more of a user’s available usage allowance. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will additionally receive access to Deep Think, an option designed for maximum parallel reasoning on complex tasks. The option is limited to the two higher subscription tiers.
The October restrictions follow earlier changes to Gemini usage limits introduced on May 17, 2026. Google moved Gemini Apps to compute-based limits that refresh every five hours until a weekly allowance is reached. Usage calculations consider prompt complexity, the features used and the length of a conversation. Paid subscribers receive higher limits, while premium models and features can use those limits more quickly. Users under 18 received those earlier changes on July 24.
Gemini limits vary across subscription tiers
Google currently sets standard usage limits for people without a Google AI plan. AI Plus provides limits that are twice the standard level, while AI Pro raises them to four times standard. AI Ultra offers either five times or 20 times the AI Pro level, depending on the subscription. Google lists media generation, Deep Research, Pro, extended thinking and Deep Think among features that can consume larger portions of available usage. The company says paid users receive higher limits than free users.
The announced October changes apply specifically to Gemini Apps on personal Google accounts. Google maintains separate arrangements for people using work or school accounts. Users can manage, upgrade, change or cancel Google AI plans through Gemini Apps and Google One. After the change, free personal accounts will offer Flash-Lite instead of access to Flash and Pro. The company also advises users to keep the Gemini mobile app updated as the new access rules take effect.
